Jim Prentice doesn't want to pay for incoming text messages

Bell and Telus have announced that they are changing their wireless rate plans and charging users $0.15 for each incoming text message. (Does anyone else find it suspicious that they made this announcement at the same time? Aren’t they supposed to be competitors?)

So since the receiver of the message now has to pay 15 cents, does that mean the sending price will be reduced by the same amount? No, of course not. Now both sender and receiver will pay for the same message.

This must have hit a nerve with the government (probably a big user of text messaging), so much so that Industry Minister Jim Prentice as formally requested a meeting with the heads of both corporations.

While I’m glad the government is finally taking notice of something to do with wireless, I can’t help wonder why they would focus on 15 cent text messages while ignoring the entire rest of the industry?

We need more telecom competition in Canada and we need something done about it now!
